Pretending

Sometimes I pretend I don’t know what I want when I actually do know what I want — like when I am at the shop - and I want a packet of chips- and I know I want a packet of chips yet when the guy behind the counter says; ‘Can I help you?’ For some unknown reason I say the expression ‘um’ before I tell him what I want… ‘Can I help you?’ ‘Um… packet of chips thanks.’ It’s like I’m pretending to think or consider what it is I want even though I do know what I want --- like I’m afraid just to say; ‘Packet of chips thanks.’ I convince myself that acting dumb seems a better option that being absolutely direct. Sometimes I say the word ‘just’ after the expression ‘um’ when I think there’s probably no need at all. ‘Can I help you?’ ‘Um… just a packet of chips thanks.’ Just! The word just to me suggests that there could be lots of other things I want to buy but I’ve narrowed down the enormous possibilities and right now am only taking the chips. Surely simply asking for a packet of chips and not asking for anything else at the same time suggests that perhaps it’s only the chips I actually do want… I don’t know…maybe I do know
